I came home today to not one, but two wonderful surprises – packages from Australia! I’ve been feeling a little homesick lately, and I can’t begin to express how thrilled I was to come home to these gifts. I’ve received a few other parcels and packages in recent weeks, so I thought I might take a moment to share them.

Birthday parcels – from the mums in my life

I’ve never had a birthday so far from home before, and I’ve gotta say – it was tough! Despite the (loads!) of fun and birthday wishes I got from my new friends here, I was super-sad to be so far away from so many of the people I love.

Until these packages arrived!!

The first package is from my wonderful parents. My mother now confesses that she scoured the streets of Sydney to find this perfect gift for me. The first thing she knows about me is that I love to drink tea! I just wish she was here to share it with me 🙂

But possibly my favourite part about this package was the secret second gift tucked away inside the card…

The second package was from my beautiful mother in law! And it was another wonderful taste of home. This gorgeous hand-crafted necklace all the way from Nagambie, Victoria, complete with an embedded eyelash from the artist…

… and some Australian literature, signed by the author!

These were absolutely wonderful birthday gifts, and I’m so thankful to all of you. **blush**2016-06-05 23.18.31

A letter from my bestie

In all its delightful simplicity, this hand written note made me both joyous and tearful in a few scribbled words. Maddy, you are the best and I can’t even tell you how much happiness this brought me.

Now, I know that no one rates Australian cosmetics. And I’m certain that NO ONE goes to North America and laments the absence of Aussie products. But I’m sure you can all imagine, when you’ve spent years searching for and refining your personal daily face moisturiser needs, it’s a kick in the pants to have to start over again on a new continent. And after a few hours spent pondering the isles at the supermarket, and at Walmart, and at Drugmart (yes, all the marts), I made this wonderful discovery:Natio snp

And so for the bargain shipping price of under $30, I got me some Natio! And oh my goodness, I know it’s not exactly a present, but boy was I excited to receive this package in the mail.

For those of you that don’t know Natio, they are a wholly-Australian-owned and operated makeup and skincare brand, developed and produced in Melbourne, that specialise in plant-based, cruelty-free cosmetics. And they’re terrific. I don’t mind confessing that I am a bit of a Natio poster-child at the moment!

Not quite from home…

This one didn’t come to us directly from Australia, but it did come to someone from Australia – and it did come to us via some Australians, so I’m going to call it a home-gift.

Yes. Vegemite. I didn’t think I would miss this rich, yeasty deliciousness as much as I do, but oh my gosh – when this came to us (courtesy of, once again, the kindness and generosity of Erica and Stephen), that smell on opening – such joy! Although the bread here isn’t quite cricket either, Brendan and I shared a (pretty damn romantic in my opinion) blissful piece of vegemite toast in adoring silence and peaceful harmony.

The world is a small place 🙂
